Overseas Buyers: Attend the Austin Record Convention on October 15/16/17 and continue on to the WFMU Record Show in New York City on October 22/23/24!
I'd like to apologize to our regular record show fans who fought their way thru downtown Austin to park and deal with the crowds in order to attend the Spring SXSW show. It was a very hard event to attend either as a dealer or as a customer, and some of you will ask why did we try? The reason we attempted this show was to try and draw in some of the younger audience that were here for SXSW and bring them to our other shows. We did see a lot of them at this show and hopefully that will pay off at our future events. Still it was a very hard show on all fronts. Many dealers told me they did well but it was an uphill fight all the way. We had a lot of our overseas buyers who managed to get here but many more could not make it.
This Fall show was originally scheduled to return to the Palmer Auditorium but the City Of Austin in it's infinite wisdom has decided to undergo a two year construction program at Palmer. So rather than deal with that issue we will return to the North Austin Event Center, or the Crockett Center as it was formerly known. Yes, I know it seems like we're playing musical chairs with the show but this move is for the best on all levels.
Along with it's name change the North Austin Center has undergone other new renovations that make it much more appealing for our use both inside and outside. A new roof, new paint, tables and other improvements make the facility much better for our use. So for the future our convention home will be the North Austin Center. Along with the new remodeling, the North Austin locale has plenty of handy free parking and easy accessibility for loading in dealers. And as we have seen recently at the Convention Center, these issues are of great importance, for any event!!!
We're doing a co-promotion with the WFMU Record Show in New York City for the Fall event. Their show will run one week later than ours so overseas buyers can fly in to the Austin show and continue on to New York one week later. This should help both shows increase their overseas buyer numbers with the convenience of doing two shows.
In the last several years I've heard of dealers grossing 4 and 5 figure totals at the show. For one weekend that's not too bad but the reality is - if one has the right records at the right prices it's not hard to reach that level. The buyers are here with the $$$, just show them the records!
The Austin Record Convention is the largest sale of recorded music in the USA. There is more music and related memorabilia available here, at one time, than anywhere else. Ranging from the 78's of the 1930s to the latest compact discs of today, over one million 78s, 45s, LPs, CDs, cassettes, posters and collectibles (probably even a few 8-track tapes!) are in the auditorium. Over 300 different dealers from all over the USA and Europe are spread out over 50,000 square feet of floor space. The show is so big that to see everything takes most of the weekend, so if you're in a hurry we have tables where customers can post search announcements in hopes of locating specific items. For anyone unable to attend the show and looking for a long lost item, contact us as we provided a service to locate those treasures.
The show brings together collectors and dealers from all over the world for a weekend of activity in Austin. The event started in 1981 and has been held twice a year, in the spring and fall, ever since. It has grown steadily over the years and now uses all available floor space at the event center. The location in Austin, "Live Music Capital of the World", is a beautiful city that is great fun to visit has aided in the popularity of the event. If you attend the show be sure to save some energy for an evening visit to any of the many clubs around town and check out the live music scene for which Austin is world famous.
